The Seven Phases of Network Development

Phase 3—Content Organization: When there is a grasp of what existing content is usable and which components need to be created, the next step is to organize this content into what amounts to a site map. A site map is a hierarchically arranged content plan that later guides network construction activities, just as a blueprint guides construction of a house.

We like to use a low-tech methodology called card sorting for determining this content organization. Some people prefer organization software. The method chosen is up to you.

The ultimate goal of this process is to create an organizational structure that is so intuitive, and so easy to use, that anyone can find a piece of content within seconds—even if there are thousands of options available. Keep in mind that if you can't find the needed content now, in this site map, the presenter probably won't be able to find it either when the real network is built. Phase 3 helps designers work through such logistical issues early on.
